When I enabled internal bitmaps a simple copy operation performace dropped to HALF! When I used bitmap on a external device (a disk not part of the array) the performance dropped only ~3%. So if you really can't afford slowdown during RAID rebuild try to use external bitmap if at all possible. If you use internal bitmap, check performance in an operations you use regulary.
