I have been using the content attribute in my print stylesheets for a couple of years for this reason. It does work on IE, but then again you should reward people for using (more) standards compliant browsers.
Being able to change your stylesheet is a requirement any semi professional looking blog.

How much access do most bloggers have to their platform? I thought most of the hosted platforms allowed you to change the template, so you could insert the above style. Is there a good recent comparison/ survey/ review out there?
http://jayajha.wordpress.com/2005/09/27/bloggercom-vs-wordpresscom/ suggests both blogger and wordpress hosting platforms support it, but that's from 2005, so maybe out-of-date.

http://mindboosternoori.blogspot.com/2007/09/citing-references-in-blog-posts.html
The above URL gave me a couple of extra ideas about TinyURL so I updated that section.
MJR: Good idea about the stylesheet. Pity I'm not that great a web programmer. Also I was mostly thinking of things that can be done without web programming (as most bloggers don't have such access to their platform).

Bleah. I should read all earlier comments before answering the first one. A second line of
 content: "[" attr(href) "]";
will work just as well.
(It's now pretty tempting to try a meta http-equiv redirect tag to see if it works...)

Something like:
a:after { /* Not MSIE? */
 content: "";
 font-size: 90%;
 padding-left: 1ex;
}
in the print stylesheet perhaps?
MJR, your friendly cooperative-webmaster-for-hire.

Ech, I didn't realise markup was allowed. I was talking about the <blockquote> and <q> HTML elements (blockquote and q).
